Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

3 entries

1. almost pointless to apply here if you aren't a research fellow or have a strong connection. nepotism is worth more than anything else here

2. I was offered an away in June and had to decline it because in their offer email they stated that because of the "number of attendings we would be rotating with" we should not expect letters of recommendation nor ask for them.

💬1. seriously, why would ANYONE waste a signal here if you didnt do a RY with the department? 90-100% of their spots go to their own fellows.

Not trying to light a fire. But what are people's thoughts on Columbia vs mt Sinai?

My question about Sinai research fellowships was removed, but here it is again: Does Dr. Guttman at Sinai still offer research fellowships to M3's? Someone here mentioned that sinai doesn't do research fellowships anymore but the DIGA spreadsheet says otherwise?

I think it's absolutely hilarious how this spreadsheet tries to compare ERAS application/NRMP trends from other specialties, when no other specialty works at all the way Derm does behind the scenes when it comes to matching. Boy if you all knew the stories in the last 20 years. Don't get me wrong, the field is absolutely wonderful, but it's a very tight field, and the people in control of the specialty in terms of academic derm faculty aren't like academic faculty in other specialties. This is especially the case if you suddenly go unmatched. <- are you saying the unmatched people had it coming for them bc of faculty who tanked them? < It's more a comment on academic derm faculty than on M4 derm applicants themselves. My point is academic derm faculty have done a lot of shady & passive agressive shit (that Mt. Sinai Derm research fellowship example below is a good example of what I'm talking about) as well as making promises to med students that they'll match at a certain place and then those people magically match somewhere lower, or as you mention, blackballing (not ranked at all or ranked so low there is no way the person will match there) a student, although that doesn't happen as often, but can sometimes happen to derm research fellows. What I'm saying is that the reality of it all (no matter how many nice & wonderful things are said to your face and no matter how well you genuinely thought that you "connected" with a derm faculty member in research or at an audition rotation) comes to the surface, especially if you go unmatched, can be a very huge shock. It really makes you realize as a med student, that you can't necessarily fully trust even the best of derm faculty in what can be and/or feel like a very dog-eat-dog process. That's different from the approach of academic faculty in other specialties, even in the more competitive ones (i.e. ENT, Ortho, etc.)

What derm mentors do you think at Mt Sinai are exceptional?

Does anyone know why Sinai's faculty are all so new..? < new chair, new vision from what i've heard. they've had some really impressive recent recruits. < could you name some of those people? < Brian Kim, neuroimmune guru<<<Jesse Lewin, top Mohs surgeon << let alone the chair Dr. Gutman, Darrell S Rigel < With all of these faculty changes, how has the culture been? < not malignant at all, they have very good schedule < from the open house, it sounds like they also got a senior path faculty from Columbia (Niedt) and a new one joining soon from NYU (Randie Kim), also Andrew Ji from Stanford < great news, they need more dermpath faculty < was legit impressed tonight <<< Does Mark Lebwohl have much of a role as he used to in the Dermatology program at Sinai? < Lebwohl is a giant. Still very involved with trials/teaching students and residents. < Sorry, I more mean from the residency program administration side. I know Gutman took over for him. < Guttman took over as chair, I don't think there's been any recent change in program admin (PD/APD) << I rotated at Sinai and PD seems great << slightly OT, but does anyone know from the open house if you need a car to commute between sites?>>>no car needed-shuttle available < thx so much! < whats up with NYU's dermpath faculty heard a bunch of them are leaving? like from the above comment about Dr. Kim<theres not a bunch leaving, stop spreading misinformation. There is just one, as mentioned above.

Can anyone comment on the derm researchers at Mt Sinai? Who is best to work with? Guttman-Yassky, Lebwhol, etc.? Deleted: "lebwohl's stepping away from research and guttman focuses on clinical trials and rockefeller research < who do you think is best to work with? What do you mean by rockefeller? And are clinical trials research different from clinical research? < Rockefeller as in this place: https://www.rockefeller.edu/postdocs/postdoctoral-position-investigative-dermatology/; clinical trials is a type of clinical research. <<< Dr Guttman has a large lab at Sinai and for a long time does not do any research at Rockefeller. Her fellows do really well in the match. She does not primarily do clinical trials. Many new treatments in skin diseases came out of her research. Does super excitig research.< wow a true triple threat!!! so rare to find people who are actual bench to bedside and back and still thriving in academic derm nowadays>>> Guttman stopped taking reserach fellows. beware, they are misleading and will work you to the ground.>>>Not true and stop speading misinformation on a great mentor. She takes fellows and her fellows do great>>> One of MS's research fellows had an offer out of match offer in February 2022 and was told by MS (PD, Chairman, Head of Resarch) to not take it because she would be ranked to match. In March, she did not match. < whatever the true story is here, Sinai research (and the program IMO) is on the rise, ask anyone close to NYC programs. >>>someone seems to have a conflict of interest spreading misinformation about Sinai....when everyone in the country seems to think Sinai is now the number one department in the city. just look at their recruits and faculty....no need to say more..."

Can we now openly share which programs sent out RTM communications? I've had radio silence so just want to know which programs have passed me over < please do we all want to hear this < NYU, Stanford, Emory < NYU and Stanford said RTM??? No way < what about sinai? < I must be hallucinating these emails in front of me then < you got it from sinai? sigh < Not Sinai. I heard nothing from them. Just NYU, Stanford, Emory, and Northwestern < What did the NYU/Stanford emails say roughly? < RIPPPP I thought I did well at NYU and Stanford... < That they were impressed with the interview and reiterated the goodness of fit and how well the programs will help me accomplish my goals. < this isnt rtm though < this does not sound like RTM they use pretty suggestive language usually < They said "ranked to match" after all the preamble. It's uncanny how similar the emails were. < lmao i got multiple 'goodness of fit' emails that means nothing < Well I interviewed at some of the above places and have not even received the said "goodness of fit" email sooooooo < Stanford said multiple times they weren't reaching out to applicants directly < “As we mentioned on interview day, in an effort to respect your decision making and personal time, we will not be reaching out to any applicants prior to match day this year. That said, we want to be a resource to each of you as you make this important decision, so please do not hesitate to reach out if there is any more information we can provide about our program that will help you feel more confident in making your decision about where you would feel best supported and prepared to launch your career in our wonderful field. We feel very lucky that each of you has chosen dermatology, and we are so excited to see the way you will brighten the future of our specialty!” < this is not a rtm email. rtm email literally says ranked to match that is why it is called rtm email < How abt NYU? What does the RTM email say? < yo this cell is like watching a court case be solved LOL < NYU sent an email to applicants last year saying they weren't doing RTM call. How come they flipped this year? < they didn't this person is a troll and doesnt realize how many people ahve access to top 5 program info and receipts < tea 💅🏻. < We'll find out in 2 weeks < we literally won't ever get confirmation about RTM rumors but ok < i mean you may still match there and clearly they liked you as not everyone got it but just saying that these are not rtm emails.
