Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

4 entries

1. Elitist (to no one's surprise), and many faculty give preferential treatment to rotating medical students from more prestigious schools. As much as they emphasize being socially attuned and progressive, at the end of the day, they're just another ivory tower institution masquerading as a social justice warrior.

1. You don't actually HAVE to be a former pediatrician to apply for this and be considered. Wish I knew this earlier, I would have applied.

2. Interviewer made disparaging comments about where I went to school

💬1. It does say on their website "preferred but not required;" I wonder if they've taken applicants w/o previous peds residency. > guess we will find out soon > this is the first year of the track and it seemed like everybody was an MS4 during the interview +1

Did UCSF send out all invites? < since they are individually calling us, i don't think anyone can answer this accurately until the day is over

was just looking at salaries and what they amount to post-tax, and how does anyone afford to live in HCOL cities with a resident salary? It comes out to ~4k post-tax per month - if 1k is food, 1k is car / insurance, 1k is loans / utilities, that leaves 1k for rent?? wtf?? < I'm from canada with a significantly high COL. Lived in a 7 bedroom home and that was ~600 in bills. How would one person even amount to 1k in utilities?? < I said loans + utilities, some of us have loans that would amount to ~$500 on REPAYE. And okay, your rent might be $600, but it's ridiculous that as adults we need to have 6 roommates to afford rent... < 1k/month on food is super high, cooking and meal prep will save you lots < UCSF/Stanford gives housing stipends + below market rate subsidized housing < What about NYC programs? There's limited subsidized housing if any and rent is expensive af... < Please drop interviews from NYC programs and please do not rank them high. lolll

#1912022-2023 DermMar 21

I know some residents in major cities have to ask parents/family for financial support because they can't cover the COL with the resident salary < absolutely ridiculous. not everyone has that kind of support, and even for those who do it shouldn't come to that! < your privilege is showing. No one said don't ask ur parents, they said it shouldn't have to come to that. You are probably 25+ and still have to ask your parents for help financially to afford to have a place to live even with a salary and you don't see a problem with that? We get it your parents have money. Weird flex on an anonymous page where everyone is an otter or flying frog < LMAO your response made me laugh and I appreciate the support! I don't think that person understood the point I was making... :')

Hi everyone. M3 here and thinking about aways. Is it worth doing aways at the top programs? < The advice I received is to focus more on doing aways at programs that may be interested in taking you, and that you would be happy training at. It may not be your first choice, but a good fit nonetheless. Top programs are unlikely to interview you based on away rotation performance alone. The rest of your application should be among the top derm applicants as well. << Agreed on this. Depending on the tier of your particular medical school, don't do audition Derm rotations at top-tier Derm places like Harvard, UCSF, Penn, NYU, Stanford, etc. thinking that you're somehow just going to so "wow" derm attendings w/your med student derm knowledge & hard work that you'll either get an interview or that you'll get a stellar letter to be able to use to get interviews at other places (keep in mind that these places have their own home med students going for Derm whom they have worked with for years). That's just not how it works, unfortunately, even w/stratospheric board scores. Wouldn't matter even if you read & memorized all of Andrews. Choose the location and institution of your audition derm elective carefully (talk w/your home derm program faculty mentors, w/previous graduating Derm alumni from your institution, etc.). It can sometimes mean the difference between matching vs. not matching. < what if you have strong connections at top programs and then do an away there, ie stanford/upenn mentor for 2 years and then do an away? << If you have strong connections (I'm assuming you did research w/that Stanford/UPenn Derm mentor for 2 years and were relatively productive) then yes, it could very much help. This is where showing your academic record and CV to that Stanford/UPenn mentor would help.

Do y'all think it's worth it to signal top tier places (UCSF, Penn, etc)?

i don't get why people are mad. just wait one cycle and things will go back to normal. look at emory. we actually had a bet they won't match a black resident this time given how many they did last time lol they said too many negros lol

#41292021-2022 DermMar 21

right!! they def overcorrected lol

...there is literally a black guy lol < There is no black guy, just a black girl < who is the black guy? https://twitter.com/EmoryDerm/status/1504948910271434765/photo/1 <hes not black lol < he is for sure black. What a stupid take < its still a diverse class half are not white

Mar 21

but this happened last cycle too lol < because derm was really white. now it isn't or at least it is less so. i wonder if derm is still the second least diverse specialty after the last two cycles. < 0 chance of that lol urms have taken over... < you are so dramatic

fr. im sure there is a conversation going in in harvard now about when it will be politically correct to go back to taking no black people. Hahahahaha < the funny part is many urms don't even apply to these programs because for a host of reasons we are just not tryna go to places like this so reading all this, i can't help laughing because people are really fighting with imaginary competition from urms >literally imaginary. & ppl are conceding to the fact that they saw the same URMs at these top interviews but somehow its a slew of URMs with unfair advantages. I am sure top programs recycled the same ORM applicants as well < that is another funny part. there is a reason why if nyu and ucsf match black residents, then penn and harvard don't and vice versa. its because they same people applied to them all...all 10 of them of which 6 got interviews. so if some get, others are sorry out of luck because that is it but sure y'all should keep going. < this is actually important because it gets at the point people here are missing because they are so focused on being mad. your competition is mid tier programs. for one, there is more of them and can really affect the orm match rate but also these are the programs urms are applying to but no, lets focus on harvard < just look at stanford

Really striking how few white people were matched at the top programs this year (not a complaint, but it's VERY noticable...). I'm glad that programs are buying into SOC but worry about it being superficial/not nuanced tbh, just looking at the top programs that are especially virtue signal-y. < I strongly agree with this, and it's noticable that the same 5-10 URMs were at all the top interviews. < where was this take when harvard was taking mostly white people? was boston mostly white then? until last year, harvard embarassingly had the same black resident hosting diversity events with her horrendous internet but still had to be her as no one else to take her place. Do you think if we go back a few years to past spreadsheets, we will see this be a problem? even if harvard takes all black students for the next ten years, i would still not balance out. go somewhere else.

#41052021-2022 DermMar 21

YES..... like that harvard match list props to y'all but chile boston ain't 33% black (nobody come for me props to these people i'm sure they all deserve it) < yeah... theyve taken 2 white people in the last two years total < so is this only a problem for y'all with top schools? because tons of schools have no urm student at all but no one is pointing out how very white many derm programs still are < it's not just harvard, but it's a great example of what's happening now. while well intentioned, the "overcorrection" bias is really, really starkly obvious. Harvard Derm goes from having almost NO black residents to "taking 2 white people in the last two years." < good. they were excessively taking white people and no one said boo. maybe now they are at a point where that is sustainable as a program but it is like this for them compared to ucsf because they were very white/asian so of course it looks so stark

It introduces a risk of topical or superficial selection of residents. < when it doesn't benefit white people (or white people no longer have the upper hand), all of a sudden it goes from silence and giggling to stop, stop!! https://twitter.com/Willbsuccessful/status/1367911933467385860 < I like how race hustlers like yourself consider Asians to be white.

Mar 21
0

because the goal is to get the residency to be representative not any one class < Racial quotas please can we just do it already> white applicants make up like 55% of med grads, it's normal for them to take a larger percentage. Not taking any isn't the answer and neither is taking too many. There is a literal percentage you can look at here

are derm applicants generally insecure about their IV? everything here always skews super top heavy. look at the rol. it is no fun if it is all penn and ucsf

Can you be a pure clinical professor of Derm within a top academic program (e.g., Harvard, UCSF, Stanford, etc.)? I am referring to a position with minimal research responsibilities. If so, how difficult are these positions to acquire after residency if one comes from a mid-tier residency program? Assume I don't care about money and am willing to make well-below market salary (e.g., 100k). I know that academics is less attractive (because of $$$) but I would imagine that jobs at top tier programs are still hard to get. < pretty easy, not many people are willing to take that big of a salary cut

Did anyone get RTM (direct or via mentor) from Harvard, UCSF, Penn, NYU or Stanford (officially or unofficially)? Don't need to say which one but just any of them at all? < got it from 3 of them. <Lol I already know 3 that explicity said they won't do RTM < i would say they were unofficial, individuals can be acting outside of the policy of the department as a whole

how positive are we that UCSF is taking 5 clinical and 2 research? Also Yale is now 6 instead of 4-5? < 100% positive because of NRMP website

any calls from Penn? < co-ask, from harvard, ucsf, stanford, nyu, nw, emory, utsw etc ? lolll < yes for two of those but they contacted my mentor not me lol<also got 1 of these but contacted mentor not me < Harvard literally sent out an email last week saying they aren't doing RTM calls. < i mean, not doing rtm is means not contacting you as a student. they (programs) who say not rtm may still contact your mentors to vet you as someone else whose mentor was contacted from a no rtm program < that's not what OP was asking about
