best research fellowships/mentors? < For medical students or for MD only research fellowships? < i would love to head about the successful MD only research fellowships for people who didnt match the first time.... is it like sinai, NW, UCSF, UCD? < Mt. Sinai is probably best to match at Sinai. UCSF and NW would help best to match at other places not necessarily at UCSF and NW. < what about miami, or wu's fellowship? < i am looking at wu's page and he says all of his fellows have published 10 reviews and retrospective studies which sounds like torture but they have a good track record of matching medical students at least. doesnt look like as many MD fellows. < Jashin Wu used to be at Kaiser Perm Derm when that program started new but I don't think he's with them anymore. It looks like he mainly takes students now to help do his research. Likely unpaid. < oh ew, not doing anything unpaid ever again < If you do a research fellowship post MD those are almost always paid because you have something valuable you can get after USMLE Step 3 completion and internship completion: a full medical license < thank goodnessy

Is anyone familiar with maternal/paternal leave benefits of different programs. Are they all the same for every program? < of course they're not; you have to ask individually <I just remembered UCSF had a great benefit on that front, 6 or 8 weeks for both parternity/maternity leave

Any thoughts on UCSF vs Penn vs Stanford vs NYU? NYU - Residents seem kind of stressed out but they obviously get incredible breadth in their training. UCSF - similar breadth as NYU, not as busy but also maybe more resident support and QoL (especially with financial assistance NYU doesn't get)? Stanford - also seems pretty great in terms of QoL, great subspecialty training, more chill than NYU/UCSF? Penn - low cost of living, seems like residents are happy and supported there? I'm not really sure what are the specifics that make it so amazing like everyone says since their interview day wasn't focused on selling themselves. But I'm kind of torn. Any advice here?

Anyone else having a hard time on ranking UCSF and Penn? The only big differentiator I can think of is location, otherwise, they're both really amazing. I keep going back and forth.

do we have any confirmation/inside info of how many harvard is taking this year? i know they vary every year and looks like a lot of people (me included) are ranking them #1 < harvard rank tally has been tampered, if you check edit history you'll know how < has anyone on here decided to not rank harvard #1? <yes < why < coz ppl like SF or NYC better < I'm guessing people are choosing Penn & UCSF over Harvard d/t better mentorship, QoL, lower COL (Penn), less in-patient, housing stipend (UCSF), and moonlighting opportunities.

Or am I reading that wrong? Seems like a less than objective way to rank < It's all based on opinion. In the past, there have been a few publications that have attempted to rank programs based on NIH funding, faculty, residents, research output, etc (https://cdn.mdedge.com/files/s3fs-public/Document/September-2017/CT094100189_REV.pdf) but this is outdated now. From what I've been told, you've got the big powerhouses (NYU, Penn, UCSF, Harvard, Yale, Stanford), the great but not quite top programs (Emory, Northwestern, Sinai, Wake Forest, Johns Hopkins, Miami, UTSW), a bunch of solid programs that aren't particularly famous for research or anything but will still train you well and prepare you for a career, and then a few bottom tier programs that have been known to have issues (ie flagged by ACGME, residents don't match to fellowships, program closes midway through a year, etc) < is there anything more recent?"

UCSF interview was a LOT haha. Routine questions but asked in a way that was more in-depth? < I loved the interview! I thought they asked reflective questions but made it conversational.

I find it hard to believe two people are ranking UCSF #7. How do you find 6 programs to rank ahead of UCSF? < they are just trolls. Some jealous appicants messing with the numbers. <I'm prob ranking it 5th< that's why they shouldn't interview so many URMs. URMs were just annoyed about representation some rows down but now have the chance to get one of the best training programs in the country and wonder why these places don't have as many URMs. What a waste!

If you had no geographic preference/ could go anywhere, which top 5 program would you choose and why? <UCSF, best location, culture and financial support< does anyone actually know the residents there? are they really that nice? Yes, they are AMAZING and very generous with their time.

anyone know if UCSF has a rule on post II communication (i.e. thank yous, or even LOI)< I talked to a resident who said it was worth sending a LOI but unsure if it impacts anything
