What anonymous posters said
Several posts describe the away rotation as largely shadowing-based with limited chances to present, and multiple posters mention that letters of recommendation are not provided to rotators. Some commenters raised concerns about mentorship and support within the department, while others referenced a leadership transition and an internal review tied to resident survey feedback. A few posts also noted lower-than-expected match numbers in a recent cycle.

Has WashU sent their PSTP interview invites? < have not heard anything yet!
but is it actually a big name? washu seems like a mid name to me
Stop stressing about first looks its literally all the same regurgitated shit and not winning you brownie points showing up to all of them, just look up info online as most programs have their scheduling. The residents on there are gonna give you cherry coated answer you'll get the real tea by mentors and ppl in the field you know < ngl all advice is different and a resident at one of these programs did say that the program does take look at this kind of stuff. just food for thought <food for thought unless washu, then food is cancelled for residents and prospective residents
any more tea on wash u being toxic? on paper it would be a perfect choice for me so want to know more before I abandon it < would suggest you speak to a current/future/past resident and take what you find here w a grain of salt
how do you know if an away needs "pre-approval"? Not sure if the programs I applied to just havent asked or if I am missing something... >it would be on the program's website or course description, I'd just check every time bc some are open on VSLO and you can send a full application in and not know about that. I accidentally did that with Wash U. It's not that many programs that I've seen tho> thank you!
I just checked WashU's resident class, half of the 2026 class is Asian, as is 33% of the class of 2027. Are we just angry that someone actually decided to do DEIs and didn't just lie like other programs?
I've seen DEI boards that are just old white dudes at multiple programs. St. Louis having stuff to do is debatable, but yeah she can pick which residents she wants.>there are faculty at WashU that have been talking about and doing DEI in derm for decades before Rosman. she is just more popular amongst med students << Who?
which programs did not match URMs this year? trying to understand which places might be a better fit for me when applying < another way to try and suss this out would be to look at programs that have financial support for URMs doing aways
I'd still apply broadly and to anywhere you're interested, some programs vary each year in how many URM are matched, it is an algorithm that makes the final match after all so you could very well have a shot << Yup, as a whole there are very few URM applicants in Derm in absolute number (compared to the entire applicant pool) so a place not matching one doesn't mean anything, since it also depends on applicant preferences too, who may want to live closer to home or in a more bustling city, etc. That being said, I agree, find out which ones have a paid stipend for aways for URM students as obviously it's something they'll look for when selecting for interviews, but more importantly, apply broadly. You don't get to be choosy when it comes to Derm, so outside of programs that say only recruit DO students (and you happen to be an MD student), apply to them all.
Yeah I think people can forget it is a two way applicant proposing algorithm when they look at resident classes, URMs are a very small number of the overall pool < WashU has half of their residents as black lol < Top programs can pretty much recruit/accept whoever they want, hence why I always laugh when top programs say they can't "find" enough URMs. Good for WashU for having black applicants for the mainly black population. << For several cycles since Ilana Rosman became PD she's made it her goal to recruit URM applicants and is VERY huge on DEI. I have to give her credit there. She doesn't just talk. She does it. Very different than how Wash U has traditionally recruited Derm applicants -- people from top tier schools w/top board scores and class rank, with many publications, and so the resident class was traditionally mainly white and Asian.
Curious if anyone has received a WashU peds prelim invite? apparently they don't always take a prelim spot, but they do most years...just curious if i was passed over or if they are sending them late >also have not heard from them if that helps!
UW vs WashU vs UMich
HF v Wash U?
so things went to shit after 2014. anyone know what happened between 2014-15? https://residency.wustl.edu/choosing-a-specialty/specialty-descriptions/dermatology/ < LOL at labeling Dermatology as "intermediate" in competitiveness before 2015. That's absolutely ludicrous.
Does anyone have strong opinions about programs that are under Internal Medicine instead of their own department? Does that make a big difference in teh training or the decisions that each program can make? < It very much depends on the program. Dermatology at Wash U is a "division" under Internal Medicine and I don't think anyone would reasonably say it's a weaker training program for not being it's own department. For the longest time, I believe Vanderbilt Derm used to also be a division as well and it's hardly a weak program. Being a division is more about logistics in terms of revenue brought into the hospital system, which tends to more affect things above a resident's paygrade in terms of things that are important on an educational level
Everyone seemed to say Wash U
Censorship of "DIGA" and "PD of WashU" in spreadsheet lolll. Very China < I'm trying to go through and re-add the deleted cells & protect them. It's like these people have lived in a bubble all their lives lol

I don't think anyone is angry that Dr. Rosman has made a voluntary decision to incorporate DEI into derm resident recruitment at her program at Wash U since taking over. She's PD and can do whatever she wants at her program and decidee how they want to recruit residents. And because Wash U is a relatively high ranked med school with a lot of resources, in a city like St. Louis where there is stuff to do, she has the luxury of doing that. She's pretty upfront about it and has posted photos of herself at meetings discussing DEI. I actually admire her for not lying. Many other programs clearly lie and are just trying to cosplay.
