what does it mean that there are so many internal applicants at top schools/programs on the next tab (i.e. 13 at UTSW, 16 at Harvard?) will people go unmatched / will their programs take more of them?

The UTSW meet and greet was pretty amazing, had no idea they had so much going for them. What are the top 5 programs for derm? Harvard, Penn, NYU, UCSF < Yea those programs seems to be the usual consensus < I feel like these are all overrated. < how can they be overrated if they are literally the best programs in the country< I think of these 4 NYU is probably the best and Harvard probably the weakest. x4 < Seems like NYU=UCSF>Penn>Harvard from the websites and what I've heard on the topical podcast but I don't think I will get interviews at any of these lmfao < which episode talks about program rankings?< OP here. There is no episode that has rankings. I was speaking to my own research looking at their curriculums and schedules. I brought up the Topical podcast because there is an episode that talks about the weaknesses at Harvard Combined which seemed to make the training a little weaker than the others mentioned, but what do I really know? < I think it comes down to geographic preferences and career goals between these programs. They all have their strengths and their weaknesses, but train amazing dermatologists.

If I accepted an away rotation at Program #1 several weeks ago, but then just got accepted to an away at Program #2... 1) would it eliminate my chances of getting a residency interview at Program #2 if I decline their away since my med school only allows 1 away rotation per student due to covid? 2) Do other programs care which away they see on ERAS app (ex: Harvard vs. Northwestern)?

M3 here curious if people did not rank Stanford and UCSF highly causing them both to go far down their lists (they both matched IMGs). Is that normal?< UCSF is considered the best program in the country by many. They can do whatever they want and rank who they want. Stanford is Stanford, pretty sure they are in the same boat as UCSF and don't match far down their lists. UCSF also interviews like 20 people. That is a different level of elite. x2 <also being an IMG does not mean they are a bad candidate, some of them have already been derms in other countries for years, with tons of research in us, and/or phd's. they probably are/were better than other candidates x4< yea the IMGs the T10s match are always insane candidates x2
imagine thinking UCSF/Stanford matched an IMG because they couldn't find anyone else haha x1000001

the fact that this M3 is insulting IMG's who earned a spot at stanford and UCSF is literally insane. IMG's have to work way harder to get a spot and an IMG who is able to match anywhere in derm let alone a top program is way more qualified than you, I guarantee it. x1 << The M3 person is also missing that the UCSF candidate did an entire UCSF pediatrics residency... and is now doing a 2nd residency< The UCSF resident has the following credentials: MD, PhD, peds residency in France, Peds derm fellowship in France, Peds Residency at UCSF THEN matched at UCSF derm with these impressive credentials and TBH probably the most qualified/impressive person they matched this cycle (this is saying a lot since their match list is baller). What do you have M3?

I am sure you are at a good program, but there is no such thing as a T25 as there are no respected rankings that are so granular. There is the T5ish, then an additional 5-10 places that people call "T10" because they are just barely outside the t5, but people debate how they compare to one another. That's it, don't quantify. Congrats on the match! Sounds like an awesome program

splitting hairs< I would say NYU and UCSF are a tad strongger clinically because of the time spent at the VA and County hospitals = more autonomy but all will set you up nicely. Harvard doesn't have a real continuity clinic so docks some quality there but Stanford is the weakest of all 4.

M3, why don't you apply to them and see where (if any) you are offered interviews before splitting microscopic hairs. X2 There is no difference between these programs, and many more, in terms of what you can do after residency. None.

do connections matter for top programs? i dont even think harvard matched a lot of their own reseach fellows< I interviewed at >5 T10s and matched at a T10 with no connections but not sure if that is common.
depends if you letter writers are known as well, it is not uncommon but I think up to 25% of all derm positions are generally spoken for before interviews even start which is i think maybe even an underestimate with the number of people that match home programs<lol does anyone know for sure that these backdoor deals happen or just speculation??< they happen. i just don't know if it is 25%

its not a backdoor deal, matching at your home program is a connection, having your mentor or PD or LOR writer that trained with someone or at a place. Perhaps the chair at a program trained at your home dept or grew up in your hometown or the program is in your hometown. This is incredibly common stuff that people may not realize immediately or may choose to ignore thinking they did it all themselves but helps a ton when everyone is so qualified already and picking from the stack is difficult<those connections are fair IMO. What I meant was backdoor deals—like secretive "ok i'll guarantee your student a spot if you guarantee mine etc", like borderline illegal

the nepotism is mostly just the name endorsing your application. They aren't actively pulling strings and getting weird favors. The program leadership reading the LOR see the name, and think: "I've known this individual for 20 years. I know their standard. If they endorse this applicant like this, the applicant must be special" x3 <<"25% of all derm positions are generally spoken for before interviews even start" --- evidence?

Derm ppl tend to be more intense (and smart) so they're all for it but tbh it is a tough year and the PD will say that to you on interview day. this being said some people might want the challenge, like the prestige, get excited about the free food and nice facilities, etc! <yeah the PD did say that on interview day lol. The resident on my interview day straight up said that TYs get taken advantage of there. The ED rotation at Cornell is also not a favorite and apparently they were having issues with PPE for the TYs. That was enough for me to not rank it as highly
