do people get interviews from most of their prelim schools, and what percentage of transitional year apps do people get interviews for?

#3122025–2026 DermFeb 21

there's no available offiicial data that separates them i think. i applied to 22 IM prelims and received 11 (including programs like Yale that didn't do interviews/ranked everyone (?)). I had a better % interview invite rate for derm programs than prelims or TYs so tbh wouldn't undershoot it

Feb 21
0

I applied to 30 and got like 18

Feb 21
0

applied to 30ish and got 10, it really depends and there is no set percent you should expect

Feb 21
0

did ya'll use any IM letters, or are all derm letters okay for prelim?

Feb 21
0

advice i got was IM letter if you can and 3 derm letters, but i'm not doing my IM sub-I until after ERAS and just going to use the medicine chair letter

Feb 21

ya derm + medicine chair letter

Feb 21

i did derm letters only for the ones that did not specifically require a medicine letter

Feb 21

i did an IM letter plus my derm LORs

Why are Yale/Colorado/other schools not offering away rotations? Very annoying and unsure how to build connections at these schools...

#572025–2026 DermFeb 21

recently matched M4 here just checking the aways tab for my M3 friend and wondered the same thing!! also, best of luck to everyone applying this cycle!! y'all got this!!

Feb 21
0

I met some Yale students and they have 12-14 graduating students applying derm and barely have the capacity to slot their own students into rotations, so no room for visitors

Feb 21

for my school

Feb 21

crazy how there's so much fluctuation from year to year, my school has almost 3x the normal amount of applicants

Feb 21

12-14 out of a 100-person class is gross

Feb 21
0

Yale requires home students to do 1 month elective inpatient and 1 month elective outpatient - probably a reason for the scheduling crunch.

does anyone have info on Yale curriculum? (wks of call, consults, etc) can't find anything on their website

#30672025–2026 DermFeb 23

school name isn't everything as someone from Penn med, even tho we have a top derm program several of us weren't given help or research by our home department. It was a struggle for us to find opportunities and research. Just wanted to add since someone from HMS wrote below. Only have 3 interviews despite tons of networking, high step, etc.

#18212025–2026 DermFeb 21

looking back at your experience so far in the derm match, would you choose Penn again? If not where do you wish you would've gone (specifics not needed, just curious).

Feb 21
0

Similar experience here at another med school with a top name derm program.

Feb 21
0

> honestly don't know, I picked Penn because of its name and ranking and defintely thought there would be more support for students interested in derm. Seems like HMS also isn't that supportive based on what's written below so idk what "top" schools support students interested in derm

Feb 21
0

I will say that coming from a top school that isn't supportive can hurt you because if you reach out to other programs for research opportunities they will say that "Penn has an amazing dept work with them" and then we are also told not to do aways as it will hurt our institution name (prob because they think we will underperform)

Feb 21
0

that's crazy, any other top schools telling their students not to do aways? do you guys tend to match good anyway?

Feb 21
0

we do match well but I think it's because there's a ton of us - like we have double digit derm matches but also a ton don't match - lots of us are told to extend graduation as we are reapplying as med students rather than residents - also doesn't hurt the match rate that way lol - some of the ppl here come in with crazy good connections and exisiting research PIs, it's the reality of going to a top school, lots of competition and not enough opportunities despite there being already so many because too much interest. I have friends at HMS that also have been advised not to do aways prob the same for the T10

Feb 21
0

duke specifically advises their students to do 2 aways (smart advisors) (actually that's new, and primarily student driven bc they've had consecutive years of students not matching)> yale also advised us not to do aways

Feb 21
0

coming from a T10 also hurts when applying to mid-tier/lower-tier/community programs because they think that you won't come there (when some of us only have interviews at these programs)

Feb 21
0

so true, coming from another T10 school here and people are not getting high numbers of interviews here despite being outstanding candidates in every respect, just think that a ton of programs assume we'll go to another top program so the mid/low tier programs are incredibly low yield. also not advised to do aways

Feb 21
0

similar to the penn story, i won't say what school but also T10? when i reached out to other programs, they were like oh you go to X school, work with them, they are your best bet!

Feb 21
0

ikr how many ii are you at? did your home offer you an interview?> i'm at 7II but I did 3 aways + home and networked! despite that one program telling me off. shouldve just left that program alone but i still applied and gave them a gold lol CLOWN move!

Feb 21
0

bigger clown move is complaining when you have 7 interviews. Go prep?

Feb 21
0

#cope! never complained. simply giving more insight into how top schools can "affect" you

Feb 21

my sister (applying med school rn) also wants to do derm, do i tell her Penn is not the place for derm? Had no idea Penn was like that. She interviewed there and it is her first choice.

So sorry for infiltrating the spreadsheet, but I could use some real advice. I'm choosing between Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine (a subset of Case Western's medcial school) vs Yale School of Medicine. Very interested in derm and really don't think I will swap out. Yale is $100k more expensive. CCLCM is closer to home, has free tuition for all students, and has built in research. Tons of supportive research mentors for CCLCM students, plus they have 3 home programs in derm. Should I go CCLCM or Yale?

#36232025–2026 DermApr 24

CCLCM is the obvious choice. Cost is so important, you will be well supported, and Yale struggled with derm match this year anyways

Why did someone delete the comment about yale only matching 4/12 this year? Does anyone know if their home department really isn't supportive of their students / dealing with toxicity issues for 8 of their candidates to not match?

#34182025–2026 DermMar 21

negative comments about yale are always deleted quickly...

Mar 21
0

4/12 is crazy, but I also go to a 'top' program and we only had half of our candidates matched... if any school matched all of their candidates (>4) i'd be impressed. On an unrelated note, I saw a lot of PR students match this cycle which is pretty sick, good on them.

Mar 21

stanford matched all 5 internals this year. i think they've matched up to 12 in previous years. def at least 8.

Mar 21

half of the people matching at top programs is crazy when the overall match rate for t40 NIH funded schools is like 80% lmao

Matched at my #1 which is a T3 program (not that it matters). Sharing this for future applicants because I did NOT get a rtm call as some on here were swearing was the case for top programs. Shame on you if you lied about this!!!

#34082025–2026 DermMar 21

i matched at a T5 and also did not get a call!

Mar 21

can you share some advice on how you matched at a t3 program? did you come from a top school?

Mar 21

can you share more about your profile matching to a t5? school tier, step 2 score, research, etc?

Mar 21

can you share more about your profile matching to a t5? school tier, step 2 score, research, etc?; Penn did multiple rtm calls confirmed

Mar 21

im totally not disputing this, im just reassuring future applicants that you can match a T5 without any rtm calls too, so there doesn't need to be fear mongering. i support all sharing of information

Did Yale really have 12 internal candidates this year? Only 4 matched.

#34002025–2026 DermMar 20

how do you know? we don't have the full match list yet

Mar 20
0

they only matched 4 at URochester, Yale, Yale, and UTSW (this is the full match list)

Mar 20

oh wow, that sucks

Mar 20

9 internal applicants

Mar 20

is it possible some people matched but didn't want to be on the public match list?

Mar 21

yale derm is a horrible department that doesnt know how to support their applicants

Mar 21

dont they have a history of incestual matching too

Mar 21

What makes you say that yale doesn't support its applicants, do you go there? Ive heard there's a ton of derm research and mentorship.

Mar 21

yikes if they had that bad of a match

Mar 21

I was told they have 12 internals

Mar 21

some of them pulled out late so it's 9

Mar 21
