Will we have most weekends off as derm residents? I'm guessing yes? Forgive my ignorance. I'm too afraid to ask at interviews and I don't have a home program so I don't get a great view of the ins and outs of a derm schedule

#25372025–2026 DermFeb 21

yes, every weekend except the 6-8 you're on call PGY2

will NOT be matching @ Harvard lol thanks guys for the responses :-)

Feb 21

Feb 21

harvard has an average amount of call ~12 weeks but more consult time compared to most programs

Feb 21
0

> not OP but i also have a question im too scared too ask in case it comes off as too dumb lol but what exactly is call? like you're wokring in clinic the full day and then at night time you might also be called in for consults? or youre not working/waiting at home to see if you're gonna get consults all day? or is it like 24 hours on call? >depends on the rotation. Sometimes you're in clinic all day but also carrying the pager and you see consults in between or after clinic, this is usually for less busy call services. You can also be on inpatient consults and just on 24 hour call not seeing patients in clinic otherwise for the week. Someone else usually takes over on the weekend.

Feb 21
0

<current derm res: every program does it differently. At my program you are on normal clinic during the full day and then starting after clinic is over, you take over all the pagers and see any consults that come in overnight until the next day. You still have to work in clinic the next day. Usually weekday and weekend residents are different (split up).

Feb 21

The questions were just really odd, specific behavioral ones. Every single one of them was a question I had never been asked / haven't been asked since and I've had a good number of derm interviews so far. Just kind of threw you off and you end up rambling. Probably was their goal so i guess they achieved it. But the questions weren't like unprofessional or anything

Feb 21
1

perfectly stated!!

Feb 21
0

ok i'm n = 1 but i disagree with this one i don't think it's odd specific behavioral but maybe i've had some overlapping interview q's. also the attendings are good vibes

it's my dream to blackout these memories but instead im haunted by the memories of the regrettable nonsense i shared

Feb 21
0

Agreed with the left, they were specific where you couldn't really fit your prepped examples to the question, so you're left trying to come up with an example on the fly. Sometimes I felt like I didn't really have a good example that would make for a reasonable story

Feb 21

that program is a mess but only real ones know that but most if not all will turn a blind eye bc Harvard lol

Feb 21

to it being a mess, its way too fragmented, it should really be two separate programs (theres a reason why so many harvard residencies went from being all the associated hospitals to two or event three programs )

so many people keep saying Harvard is suboptimal training because more inpatient time and more call... do we have facts/stats on this? what are the inpatient consult time and call responsibilities, objectively speaking?

#23662025–2026 DermFeb 21

Yes the Harvard program probably has more inpatient time compared to other programs, but it amounts to 16 weeks (4 months) of inpatient consult time and call across MGH, Brigham, BI. People are just exaggerating the inpatient time, likely to dissuade others from ranking highly/#1

Feb 21
0

they have up to 6 months more inpatient time than similarly ranked programs

Feb 21
0

they do not scribe or cover attending inbox! program really tries to minimize admin (also no prior auths). inpatient and call can be tough, but residents seem happy with the balance because many blocks have great hours and alternate with inpatient. I believe it is 12 weeks of call?

Feb 21
0

according to Harvard's recruitment handbook, there is 6 to 8 months of inpatient and 12 weeks of call (not including 2 months at boston children's which is both inpt/outpt)

Feb 21
0

how does this compare with Penn (since everyone is always putting these two up against each other for #1 rank)?

Feb 21
0

lol anyone else w/ Harvard interview who literally isn't even a top applicant (no Penn/Stanford/Hopkins/UCSF) it feels so weird

Feb 21

By comparison, UCSF has 2 months of inpatient (one in PGY2, one in PGY3)

Just understand that this spreadsheet attracts/selects for the most neuro-divergent autists that all of medicine has to offer; there is a heavy selection bias (re: X vs Y sheet to see it really is the top applicants that browse this sheet). The average interviews still being 6.6 from that pool likely means to match you probably need 3-5, being realistic. Everyone on this sheet is disillusioned T40 applicants gunning for Penn, Harvard, etc.

#19102025–2026 DermFeb 21

if I only want to do private practice and don't want to do any research/academics should I rank a community program higher (like HonorHealth)? Idk if the training would be strong as it's not prestigious academically < If pressure to publish and do research would make you miserable then yes. If not, go academic just for the name. IMO community programs actually have better training and higher volume, but academic name brand looks great on paper and opens more doors early on. But in the long run, the most successful derms I know were from community programs because they learned the business of private practice during residency and got higher volume training / used to seeing way more patients from early on.

#19042025–2026 DermFeb 21

community programs are great but thinking that you won't get high volume training at an academic center is crazy. Like everything, your training and experience are PROGRAM DEPENDENT, not academic vs community. Rank which programs you like the best regardless of name, prestige, program type, etc. every program has something unique to offer. You might rank a community program first, then Harvard, then another community program, then so on. Your rank list shouldn't make sense to anyone else because it should be so tailored to your wants and needs

Feb 21
0

just rank the programs you will be happiest bro. program name doesn't matter for jobs when you're a board certified derm, unless you wanna do academics (which you dont)

Why is Hopkins derm program relatively less stronger than their peer institutes like Harvard, UCSF, Penn? Never really understood why this is the case

#18572025–2026 DermFeb 21

Hopkins derm is fine and great education - splitting hairs at this point tbh.

Feb 21

Rankings are basically equivalent to research funding amounts so they probably have less derm research relative to the others

for what it's worth i was told not to do aways by a mentor who primarily worked on research w/ me and then told to do aways by res/attendings i rotated with because it would be a good way for me to stand out to programs. so i would get multiple opinions from people before deciding not to do aways

Jun 30
0

so like what changed this year?? as an aside I think the faculty are getting tired of applicants just putting pediatric derm and wanting to work with underserved communities and not actually wanting to do that in the future. so if you're planning on putting those two to stand out, don't unless you actually strongly are passionate
