Most get spots somewhere. <the super enlightened ones might not have ranekd NW high whatsoever. the corollary to a courtesy interview is that you give too many away and suddenly you cant rank all the people you gave interviews to which is why some programs dont do that (umiami) but yall dont want to hear these facts and rather go on spreadsheets to drag programs based on your opinion of how complex systems things should be run and this culture of dragging leads to less transparency to future generations of applicants

5 entries✅1. One of the best well rounded training programs in the country. You'll work hard but come out really well trained especially in complex med derm. The best academic derms I've met have trained here. Plus it's in Miami lol (could be a con for the price and if you don't like big cities though). Some concerns for toxicity in the past but now have been vastly improved with new leadership who are super supportive of their residents. Residents also really echoed this during interviews. Really great interview day, faculty and residents seem very nice and happy to be living and training there. Away rotations are high yield here (auto IV). While Spanish is helpful, it's not absolutely required especially since its derm, but there is plenty of interpreter help available if needed (especially at the county hospital). PD and chair are amazing and constantly hiring new faculty both nationally and internationally. Many unique and rare specialty clinics. Pretty much every faculty does research. May not be the best program to go if you want a chiller schedule however.
✅2. Despite being one of the largest derm academic programs, their cosmetic training is really solid. Can't say the same for other big academic programs. Really strong surgical exposure too. Will get to manage conditions others only read about.
✅3. Fantastic away rotation experience. They spent a ton of time getting to know me and hear about my goals and how the department could support those goals. Also, extremely hands on rotation.
✅4. I've only heard amazing things from the alumni of this program with regards to culture and training. The chair is awesome. Multiple resident wellness days off each year, good elective time in final year to purse your interests
❌1. A true beacon of toxicity, from the students to the residents to the faculty. Workhorse program and hours. The pay is -not- enough for living reasonably in downtown Miami. The APD takes pride in the amount of inpatient hour and weekend calls this program has as if this is some kind of benefit/as if the majority of you will actually go into academic medicine or complex med-derm. The pro comment mentions "new leadership" but it has been the same 3 (chair, PD, APD) in charge for the last 4 or 5 years that pick favorites. This claim that the rigor will provide excellent training will frankly be disproven if you met any batch of the recently selected cohorts over the last few years. Rank high solely off location, but do not pretend the program is riding off anything but its name and the select faculty that are renowned.

I won't dispute it though because everyone has there own experience, but I think its important for others to form their own opinion on people through in person interactions. Also, I personally found their residents to be incredibly well trained, and have worked with some of their alumni who are also leaders in the field. I think you're right to say they want those who are looking to stay in academia and advance the field, and that's honestly not the majority of derm applicants so its possible this disconnect is where the 'toxicity' is being referred to.”

Sinai is probably best to match at Sinai. UCSF and NW would help best to match at other places not necessarily at UCSF and NW. < what about miami, or wu's fellowship? < i am looking at wu's page and he says all of his fellows have published 10 reviews and retrospective studies which sounds like torture but they have a good track record of matching medical students at least. doesnt look like as many MD fellows. < Jashin Wu used to be at Kaiser Perm Derm when that program started new but I don't think he's with them anymore. It looks like he mainly takes students now to help do his research. Likely unpaid. < oh ew, not doing anything unpaid ever again < If you do a research fellowship post MD those are almost always paid because you have something valuable you can get after USMLE Step 3 completion and internship completion: a full medical license < thank goodnessy

Listen I get that T10 conversations dominate this chat all the time but I think we are kinda all to blame. The personalities that end up in T10 tend to be the overbearing, louder than average, do you know who I am type that take over everything. I know, I am a recovering one. But on the other hand, when we don't post about none T10 schools, all we keep seeing are T10 posts. This system wants us to keep worshiping at the altar of prestige but if gen z has taught us anything, we know it don't gotta be that way. So I implore people here to post asking about normal programs. They are the ones we actually learn from. If I read more about NY vs Philly I will literally combust. Tell us about your love for Miami, New Mexico etc Save us from our misery < plenty of non-t10 programs in the NY and philly area. and i wish i fuckin got interviews in miami ;-; < same lol want to live vicariously

In the past, there have been a few publications that have attempted to rank programs based on NIH funding, faculty, residents, research output, etc (https://cdn.mdedge.com/files/s3fs-public/Document/September-2017/CT094100189_REV.pdf) but this is outdated now. From what I've been told, you've got the big powerhouses (NYU, Penn, UCSF, Harvard, Yale, Stanford), the great but not quite top programs (Emory, Northwestern, Sinai, Wake Forest, Johns Hopkins, Miami, UTSW), a bunch of solid programs that aren't particularly famous for research or anything but will still train you well and prepare you for a career, and then a few bottom tier programs that have been known to have issues (ie flagged by ACGME, residents don't match to fellowships, program closes midway through a year, etc) < is there anything more recent?"
