Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

5 entries

1. One of the best well rounded training programs in the country. You'll work hard but come out really well trained especially in complex med derm. The best academic derms I've met have trained here. Plus it's in Miami lol (could be a con for the price and if you don't like big cities though). Some concerns for toxicity in the past but now have been vastly improved with new leadership who are super supportive of their residents. Residents also really echoed this during interviews. Really great interview day, faculty and residents seem very nice and happy to be living and training there. Away rotations are high yield here (auto IV). While Spanish is helpful, it's not absolutely required especially since its derm, but there is plenty of interpreter help available if needed (especially at the county hospital). PD and chair are amazing and constantly hiring new faculty both nationally and internationally. Many unique and rare specialty clinics. Pretty much every faculty does research. May not be the best program to go if you want a chiller schedule however.

2. Despite being one of the largest derm academic programs, their cosmetic training is really solid. Can't say the same for other big academic programs. Really strong surgical exposure too. Will get to manage conditions others only read about.

3. Fantastic away rotation experience. They spent a ton of time getting to know me and hear about my goals and how the department could support those goals. Also, extremely hands on rotation.

4. I've only heard amazing things from the alumni of this program with regards to culture and training. The chair is awesome. Multiple resident wellness days off each year, good elective time in final year to purse your interests

1. A true beacon of toxicity, from the students to the residents to the faculty. Workhorse program and hours. The pay is -not- enough for living reasonably in downtown Miami. The APD takes pride in the amount of inpatient hour and weekend calls this program has as if this is some kind of benefit/as if the majority of you will actually go into academic medicine or complex med-derm. The pro comment mentions "new leadership" but it has been the same 3 (chair, PD, APD) in charge for the last 4 or 5 years that pick favorites. This claim that the rigor will provide excellent training will frankly be disproven if you met any batch of the recently selected cohorts over the last few years. Rank high solely off location, but do not pretend the program is riding off anything but its name and the select faculty that are renowned.

Agree on the pay to COL comment, but I personally only had great interactions with the faculty and residents so not really sure where your comments coming from. I won't dispute it though because everyone has there own experience, but I think its important for others to form their own opinion on people through in person interactions. Also, I personally found their residents to be incredibly well trained, and have worked with some of their alumni who are also leaders in the field. I think you're right to say they want those who are looking to stay in academia and advance the field, and that's honestly not the majority of derm applicants so its possible this disconnect is where the 'toxicity' is being referred to.

Is it worth even trying for an away at stanford, or too low yield ? < You miss all the shots you don't take<there is no harm in applying. if you apply for and get the away rotation at stanford what people were trying to say is suddenly your pre-test probability for actually matching there is a lot higher having gotten the away there than getting any away rotation by itself at any other institution given the scrutiny they place on selecting just a few rotators. the math works out but people still dont like to believe in facts on here < I personally know of 3 people that got aways at Stanford but none seemed to match there so I'm wondering if its low yield even after getting the away<if you made it this far as a trainee i dont need to tell you what is wrong with extrapolating from n=3 people. stanford away rotators have gotten ranked very high and many have matchrd there before. your odds are better there than umiami or harvard or almost any institution besides places like emory maybe. since stanford derm interviews are such a small number of trainees you can literally extrapolate how ranking would have been done many years of applicants and show that the odds are incredibly high for away rotators < on the flip side I know of about 4 people who did aways this past year and they all interviewed and matched there so

Do we know which schools had several unmatched applicants? <stanford < how many? < Miami, around 7 or so from the 15 the applied<sad but thats like normal for miami. stanford is unusual. we started praying for umiami this cycle when we heard there were that many applying < whats the # matched for stanford??? < The spreadsheet would suggest at least 5 but who knows how many applied < what about Brown? at some point people were saying they had more applicants than usual < Brown matched 6/6 < great!< Brown only had 6? When I rotated, they said there were 10-11 < only 6 applied this cycle in the end. People ended up taking research years. < iheard stanford was 5/10 but im not sure?

umiami is a mid tier shcool with a good derm department, so that sucks.<a dept that has a tradition of not interviewing half their students thanos style, some who even match to better derm departments < harvard is the same < Miami is a strong middle tier medical school which just happens to have a top tier Derm program. Many Miami Miller students end up doing a research year there, but as huge as their class sizes are, 15 people from Miami matching into Derm would be very unusual.

I'm so confused, accoridng to the match list tab there's way more physician only spots than was available on eras when we applied. Since when did Stanford and Miami have physician only spots?? They DEFINITELY weren't there when I applied <sure they werent or maybe you just didnt know as much as you thought about these things < I remember quadruple checking ERAS because my PD said there's usually about 10-15 PGY-2 spots per year and there were only 5 coming up on ERAS when we submitted.. I don't really care I matched at a top 20 derm program that was my number 1 but I'm just confused < some of these physician spots are proabably available under the table

Love seeing nepotism pull through strongly this year. <wtf are you talking about yale matched like none of its people to yale < not talking about Yale <all im seeing is tons of people who did research years matched. like look at northwestern for example most of their class is internals and research year people just like it always has been. miami's class has exactly 3 umiami internals just as i had predicted < no, some people have parents in high positions < you mean cronyism and not nepotism…<where is the nepotism. please point it out i dont see a single nepotism that happened this cycle <which one of her parents is an academic dermatologist who ranks applicants for residency. i think a reasonable definition of nepotism in this context is a familial connection of the first degree who is an academic dermatologist and they are involved in ranking the accused of using nepotism in their application cohort and they wouldnt have matched/been ranked high enough to match without that. everything else you can argue is just connections many of which dont involve familial connections especially in a field like this where connection building is rampant. you wouldnt call it nepotism if your neighbor is the chair of a derm dept and you happened to live there and got exposure and then decided to use that after becoming interested to secure a chance to rotate in their clinic/do research/ get a letter would you? by going to yale med school you are essentially now neighbors with lots of influential people who can help you match into derm. but thats not nepotism because you didnt use family connections to get into yale med school on that alone < when you get connections/family to both the med school and residency, call it nepotism or whatever you call it, it's not fair <its actually hard to argue that connections by family alone in most cases is the sole reason why someone gets into a us medical school since its a very stochastic process and almost all the people you would be accusing of nepotism usually have the grades/scores anyways. no one is saying it doesnt help you get noticed but im trying to say that we should draw the line for nepotism accusations at cases where you wouldnt have gotten in without that < lol there are alot of people with great scores who don't get into derm or get into med school. Then you look at a school like mine with about 30% kids of people who studied here..sure with great scores...but it is still nepotism.

Those who rotated at Uab, why do you think they didn't interview a lot of away rotators? Spill the tea. << Well for starters, UAB is a really strong Dermatology program. They don't need to interview all rotators. Good candidates come to them in the application process. << this sounds like something written by an attending or resident < what makes Uab strong? why would you want to be a derm faculty there vs at Northwestern or UMich or UTSW or UMiami or UPenn or Yale even << You're shifting the goalposts and asking a different question w/regards to the caliber of Dermatology residency programs (how you choose residency programs when it comes to training you vs. how you choose residency programs where you want to go to be an academic faculty member are totally different questions). And to the person who wrote directly after me above, yes, I'm actually a PGY-4 Derm resident, but I wanted to give some perspective as someone now on the other side of the match process. It's somewhat hard to understand for Derm applicants while you'going through it, to see and evaluate derm programs in a methodical way until they get to the other side, where it makes a lot more sense. I'll admit that it's not ideal, when you're trying to decide as an MS-3 student, where exactly to rotate in Derm in MS-4 to maximize your chances of matching into Derm or at least receiving interviews from places that you have rotated.

Do we think derm applicants as a whole are intellectually curious about certain things down to spreadsheet tropes and why things are the way they are? I remember seeing several years back some controversy about UMiami’s presentation to applicants with graphics portraying department revenue and how it did not appear to be a good “vibe” along with several other subsequent generalizations and my first thought - if the post wasn’t itself a plant by an insider to see how the spreadsheet would react to that presentation - isn’t this coming off as the program trying to play off concerns about losing funding. Wasn’t there a prominent attending who was from that program many years ago (discussed ad nauseam on other online forums) who was notorious in derm-world for a power-play involving money that led to the dissolution of another different derm residency program and thus wouldn’t this move on the program’s part be their way of reassuring applicants to not worry about that being a problem? <<< I have no clue what exactly you're saying or what your point is. Sentence structure w/o run on sentences is your friend.
