Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

5 entries

1. One of the best well rounded training programs in the country. You'll work hard but come out really well trained especially in complex med derm. The best academic derms I've met have trained here. Plus it's in Miami lol (could be a con for the price and if you don't like big cities though). Some concerns for toxicity in the past but now have been vastly improved with new leadership who are super supportive of their residents. Residents also really echoed this during interviews. Really great interview day, faculty and residents seem very nice and happy to be living and training there. Away rotations are high yield here (auto IV). While Spanish is helpful, it's not absolutely required especially since its derm, but there is plenty of interpreter help available if needed (especially at the county hospital). PD and chair are amazing and constantly hiring new faculty both nationally and internationally. Many unique and rare specialty clinics. Pretty much every faculty does research. May not be the best program to go if you want a chiller schedule however.

2. Despite being one of the largest derm academic programs, their cosmetic training is really solid. Can't say the same for other big academic programs. Really strong surgical exposure too. Will get to manage conditions others only read about.

3. Fantastic away rotation experience. They spent a ton of time getting to know me and hear about my goals and how the department could support those goals. Also, extremely hands on rotation.

4. I've only heard amazing things from the alumni of this program with regards to culture and training. The chair is awesome. Multiple resident wellness days off each year, good elective time in final year to purse your interests

1. A true beacon of toxicity, from the students to the residents to the faculty. Workhorse program and hours. The pay is -not- enough for living reasonably in downtown Miami. The APD takes pride in the amount of inpatient hour and weekend calls this program has as if this is some kind of benefit/as if the majority of you will actually go into academic medicine or complex med-derm. The pro comment mentions "new leadership" but it has been the same 3 (chair, PD, APD) in charge for the last 4 or 5 years that pick favorites. This claim that the rigor will provide excellent training will frankly be disproven if you met any batch of the recently selected cohorts over the last few years. Rank high solely off location, but do not pretend the program is riding off anything but its name and the select faculty that are renowned.

Agree on the pay to COL comment, but I personally only had great interactions with the faculty and residents so not really sure where your comments coming from. I won't dispute it though because everyone has there own experience, but I think its important for others to form their own opinion on people through in person interactions. Also, I personally found their residents to be incredibly well trained, and have worked with some of their alumni who are also leaders in the field. I think you're right to say they want those who are looking to stay in academia and advance the field, and that's honestly not the majority of derm applicants so its possible this disconnect is where the 'toxicity' is being referred to.

On the tier list, it is ridicolous to classify UAB, vanderbilt, and UT Houston as upper mid tier. UT Houston is midtier, it is quite a great program, but hard to fathom it in the same league as the likes of U of Miami etc. Vanderbilt is 100% not upper mid tier; mid tier at best but likely "the rest". Residents are from lower tier schools, no one is going to academic, research is not growing. The only thing it has going is Nashville is a cool city and probably easy to attract faculty. UAB is maybe middle tier, but likely "the rest", most residents are from lower tier places, not going into academic, sure chair is famous (but which chair isn't though?there is a reason why they are chairs), faculty are all locale, not famous, too small. Birmingham is a small city to have interesting/diverse population, not exactly a referall center as well >> Good points, but what the hell does midtier even mean??? If midtier means average, then certainly Houston is no where near midtier. 20 residents 30+ faculty and tons of specialty clinics. They may not be top tier, but they are well above average. Again, all reasons why the spreadsheet rankings are ridiculous. << i think it's important to remember that there are people on here trying to spread misinformation... <<agree with this. also, a bit curious this person decided to attack 3 southern schools at an interesting time (UT houston just came out, vandy/UAB interviewed this week); is OP sandbagging? << seems to know a lot about these programs too.... how else would you know what residents are "going into" and that "research is not growing"?

<< outing derm program nepotism, for example, students who match at a parent's place of employment, is arguably an important step moving forward to discourage future foul play. thank you to all brave whistleblowers! <Yeah, the tier list is pointless. No need to give it any thought. While it is pointless, I really like there is an explanation why we should move those 3 programs down... TBH the explanation was pretty good haha << There is also a lot of bias since it is easier to try to move programs like Hopkins or Vandy higher on the list since those names have a better brand name... tier list is so silly in a field like derm where the vast majority of us are going to be in private practice. At which point 99% of patients don't give a shit where you did residency. << haha, someone deleted a comment about Harvard nepotism

<<I have no issue with nepotism. If I have kids who want derm residency, I will definitely make phone calls and cash in favors. That’s how the world works. FWIW I’m a derm resident who matched without nepotism.

just because something DOES happen doesn't mean something SHOULD happen. yes, that's "the way the world works" but is arguably NOT the way the world should work.

< I am not surprised that Emory is up there in this ranking. As a west coaster, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by their work at this year's Society for Investigative Dermatology. Their epi output is phenomenal. <amen

Dear all, As we enter Match week, I know stress and uncertainty is often at its peak. UM Frost Dermatology will not be fortunate enough to train all of you talented and wonderful people, but I am confident that we will all be colleagues in years to come. I wish all of you the best of luck and hope your dreams and aspirations are met. I am looking forward to calling you all (soon) Dermatologists in training! While some may be disappointed but I encourage you to remember most of your role models have experienced disappointment in the past and have succeeded because they have persisted and learned from disappointment. Stay Healthy everyone! All the best, Robert S. Kirsner, M.D., PhD

FM -> Derm Cosmetics Fellowship -> dont have to deal with the rest of derm bullshit and just make a ton of money << what kind of derm cosmo fellowship can non-derm people do?? < NYU, UCLA, Miami

#12022019-2020 DermMar 23

<<Such a gunner move "hurr just don't go into derm, another spot for me". TBH you can be a chiropractor and open up a cosmetics program.

Mar 23

There are peds trained people who I have seen now have cosmetic only practices and surgeons (not plastics) who also have cosmetics only practices.

Mar 23

I am all for whatever it takes to get the cosmetics people out of our field <I don't want to do cosmetics, but I rather someone in derm do it who actually trains some in this stuff rather than FM/IM/PEDS/Neurology (went to a neuro clinic that started doing cosmetic botox as well as migraine botox) etc.

<-some resident posted online about how much they disliked the program, bad-mouthing it, etc. turns out the person was a problem resident in other ways so people took their rant with a grain of salt. UMichigan addressed it during interview day and told everyone they were taking steps to make their program less malignant. IIRC PD also just changed recently. (lurking derm resident). Thread: https://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/malignancy-at-michigan-dermatology.1296049/

Mar 23

< wish more programs would come to terms about their malignancy ;)

Mar 23

Ok, I will come out of lurking. I am a resident at UM. I'm not going to answer a ton of questions but wanted to chime in and say the online badmouthing was regarding conditions that are now totally different and the PD really made an effort to hear grievances/change. That person who did the posting was a sour character who was unhappy in general. There were also some blatant lies like our PD discourages people from getting pregnant (I think 9 people have had kids in the past 2 years). Is our program perfect? Of course not. Am I happy here? Yes I am. Did someone pay me/threaten me to post this, definitely not. If you come and interview here please ask quesitons about this - we will be 100% transparent with you. <Thank you for this!

Mar 23

Well this should be a good lesson learned for UMichigan. Often, we as applicants will get overlooked because of something on our application and programs (especially top tier) can just go to another applicant for an interview who checks all the boxes. The justification given (rightfully) is that they should not have to settle since they can get an applicant who has it all. Well UMichigan, while these rumors might not be true or the issues have been addressed, I can just rank a program that is not filled with drama and doesn't have people getting so worked up that they post online. X2

Mar 23

This "well well well michigan, i'm too good for you" post is the saltiest shit i've read on here. I'm not derm but i'm couples matching with derm and I hope you don't end up in my partner's program

Mar 23

take it for what it's worth, but I have friends who are current residents at the Michigan program. 1 loves it, 2 can't wait to get out

Mar 23
0

I think this would be true of many big programs or maybe that is overly pessimistic of me.

Mar 23
0

Or they matched residents who fell so low on their rank list that they're happy to "end up" at Michigan. I don't think it's anyone's number 1 program. << nahhh UM is definitely a backup school

Mar 23
0

<< there are some wayyyyy worse (toxic) programs than UM that are bragged about as being good. UM's just the one that people keep talking about because it's already out there in rumors. They honestly have improved considerably<what are some of the other toxic programs? x2

the system is trickle, gimme dem invites! but seriously i dont know why schools do this, i guess its their way of filtering out even more candidates...<<i guess but then they miss out on some really great applicants that might have gone there. for example, i literally couldnt choose between two schools on those dates, so i just went with the more convenient flight option. Not because i liked one school more than the other....who knows if i would have been a better fit for the other school

#4752019-2020 DermMar 23

man i feel for you, im not saying its right or anything.

Mar 23
0

I feel for UConn and Maryland internals/rotators. Only given 1 date << can you imagine if you rotated at both, and then had to pick between invites at JHU, UCSF, Northwestern, UC-Davis, UMiami, Mayo-AZ?<<that was me, i had to pick between ucsf, northwestern, mayo AZ, Davis, and hopkins <goals x3

Mar 23
0

i would love to have those problems

Mar 23
0

I hate the overlap especially since I have had to pick even though I only have 5 invites. However, with people going to 15+ or 20+ interviews, I'm glad they do this to force a little trickle. << problem is for some of us we already got rejected from these programs, so even if the spots are now open...it won't be to us :(

Mar 23
0

As someone with far more rejections than invites, we have to accept that those were not for us.

Mar 23

They say those programs are malignant so you rank them lower, and then they can match at them, lol

#5382019-2020 DermMar 23

I think there's a lot of people who state something with authority when either they don't really know themselves or when they're just being malicious and stating false stuff, but from my own limited personal understanding, these programs are the ones that repeatedly -- year after year -- are cited as "malignant." But I think people are using a broad definition of malignant and the reasons for being listed as "malignant" are different for each program -- NYU has been stated to have unhappy residents who do a lot of scut (as can be said about Columbia) with not the nicest attendings; Pitt has been stated to have somewhat uncaring attendings; USC is broadly a scandal-ridden school so not particularly dermatology department-related; Michigan has supposedly improved; UMiami they just work you hard eg, 7:00 am daily lectures (as can be said about UCSF). So I think malignant in derm programs is not like general surgery malignant, I think just one or more of hard working/unhappy residents/not very nice or caring attendings.

Mar 23
0

<<well said. I a lot of the "malignant" rep just means your are working a little harder in some way relative to some other programs. However, some of these top programs are top programs because they work you a little harder...forcing you to learn a little more. -- Agreed --> I would disagree slightly. Sometimes "working harder" doesn't mean learning more. It just means working harder. x3

Mar 23
0

<lol someone said lower that malignant means having morning lectures. Very broad range of definitions here

Mar 23
0

I think people have the expectation that derm residency should be a 9-5 cush job...? << I don't think that person was conflating 7 AM lectures with malignancy, I think it was a separate question

Mar 23
0

7 am lecture is a special type of torture but not malignant, agree.

Mar 23
0

idk I equate malignant with people (attendings, coresidents, PD, chair, etc) being actively mean and malicious. Like not caring about the residents or caring that they are unhappy. Long hours, early lecture = sucks but not necessarily malignant if people know about it in advance and sign up for it.

i think it went out on monday? << for everyone or internals?

#5512019-2020 DermMar 23

seemed like there were externals too Also, it seems Kansas went out? Is 1/16 interview date confirmed?

Mar 23
0

What are the odds of a Miami trickle?

Mar 23
0

Not horrible odds since many places like Northwestern, UCSF, Hopkins, and others overlpa with their dates

Mar 23
0

< I tried to creep and I think last year they had 2 invite dates in december, I'm wondering if that might mean they had those 2 in addition to the internal date in late october, so maybe they would have another date to release invites!!!
