❌2. Most stressful interview day. No breaks between rooms. Rapid fire of very challenging questions and follow-ups. Felt very judged with every answer I gave. PD responded with rudeness after I asked a basic question.

Question: these 1-spot tracks like Stanford peds derm (for example).. do they already know who they want for the spot ahead of time but interview as a formality? The last person who matched stanford peds derm was literally a stanford peds derm research fellow. Do we even have a chance??
nyu filled theirs so they're not interviewing this year. I think you have a chance if you have an interview :)

Is it necessary to geo pref cali programs (stanford, ucsf, ucsd, etc) if you want an interview? Or is signaling + ties enough?
didn't geo signal, had no ties, got a couple of Cali interviews (but most of them I didn't get and this was noticeable compared to my interview rate in other regions). Likely valuable but strictly speaking not necessary

I emailed Stanford for preapproval to apply for an away and got ghosted then missed the deadline for an away app, just venting. I'm pretty disappointed in myself.

Is Stanford away worth it? If selected, are you highly considered (like Miami/Emory)?
n=1, had an upperclassman do an away there but didn't get an interview, but they matched a T10 school anyways

Did an away there + gold, was told they'd "see me again" during interviews, no II. I still matched back in California at a "slightly" (I personally don't believe so after my away at Stanford) lower ranked program.

unfortuantely stanford used to have a reputation of giving a lot of IV to away rotators but this was maybe 3-4 years ago. Now, they interview <50% of people that do an away. Not worth it most likely, and whether or not you get an IV most likely wouldn't have been affected by whether you did an away.

why is it better to do a prelim over a TY if you don't match?
Looked up the cook county PGY3 that got dismissed. Very sad that this can happen. How are people getting dismissed from derm programs? Have heard of many residents now getting dismissed, for example at Mount Sinai recently too

Why did someone delete the comment about yale only matching 4/12 this year? Does anyone know if their home department really isn't supportive of their students / dealing with toxicity issues for 8 of their candidates to not match?
negative comments about yale are always deleted quickly...

4/12 is crazy, but I also go to a 'top' program and we only had half of our candidates matched... if any school matched all of their candidates (>4) i'd be impressed. On an unrelated note, I saw a lot of PR students match this cycle which is pretty sick, good on them.

you apply based on ties, connections, and location pref. Otherwise, everything else is basically RNG. Godspeed if you're aiming for T5

thank you, but connections and RNG aside, and im willing to move anywhere, are they created equal or is one going to give an edge? not trying to be a snob or anything. just want genuine info for life changing career decisions

Don't love the way the question was framed about which t5 is the "worst" - they are all great for different reasons (as are non T5 programs). Harvard is great for inpatient and complex med-derm along with network; less ideal for QoL. UCSF is great for clinical volume, location, mentorship; less ideal for QoL, exploring non-clinical interests given the more busy schedule/various sites. Penn is a good balance of clinical training, research, QoL but def leans much more academic and location is not for everyone. NYU is great for clinical volume, procedural derm, network, research; less ideal for those who aren't into NYC and its pace. Stanford is great for research, innovation, kind faculty; less ideal for Mohs, clinical volume/diversity. Just a few thougts, but again. Matching derm anywhere is a huge accomplishment - don't focus too much on the rankings, focus on the personal fit for you.
