i KNOW some of yall had some shit RY's, the time to spill the beans is NOW < did any Harvard research fellow recieve an interview at Harvard? I heard that they have not typically < yes < no < It's a relative given that if you do a dermatology research fellowship at Harvard, it's not a guaranteed interview there. Doesn't mean it can't help you match at other places. That being said, they have a LOT more derm research fellowships now than even 10 years ago, so clearly they also want to get in on the free labor exploitation grift. < how are you supposed to discuss your RY if you were the only one there lol

#40952021-2022 DermMar 21

a lot of the ones at Harvard are unpaid and kind of exploit the free labor. in general, look to see if research interns end up staying at the same institution for residency or at strong programs (which reflects the level of support and strength of letter from PI) < But dont you see, all those unpaid years is how Harvard shows its commitment to the equity piece of DEI! < omg ofc right i totally forgot we love #exploitation but then matching #urms to prove they aren't racist pos, i really hate this process lol < The edit, LOL < LOL

< harvard seems to have a couple good mentors from the sleuthing I have been doing lol. op, if you're interested in a RY, maryanne senna, arash mostaghimi, steven chen, esther freeman, and jennifer huang seem like really nice people / good mentors who publish an impressive amount and seem to match their fellows to really strong programs! < Maryanne Makredes (I guess she's married now w/her last name of Senna) is a total sweetheart. So great to see her career trajectory since med school and derm residency. < Not sure about others but know that Mostaghimi pays all of his fellows, including conference travel. A lot of work but an incredible year.

i actually feel like the match played out well overall in derm. it feels balanced to me < 67% match rate feels balanced? < 67% that isnt all white and asian people does < < LMAO are you kidding me....urms get such an advantage < what percentage of 67% do you think are urms?> Someone could figure out a percentage, but you're being willfully stubborn if you don't think URMs have an advantage. An advantage that makes sense in light of the history of the field, but an advantage nonetheless. Programs want to recruit URM applicants over ORM applicants. just a fact < has anyone seen a derm match list with more than 2 urms? if so, how many? i keep hearing about this advantage but where are they? the match list tab is almost complete. why isn't it overflowing with urms? you'd think that with all the advantage most would have matched and we would be able to see the result, no? < maybe fewer urms are applying though, hard to say without a racial/ethnic breakdown of the match rate < bro its obvious

#40672021-2022 DermMar 21

< lets assume few are applying. so where is this advantage if few are applying to start with? or better yet, where the disadvantage of urms to your application as an orm is few are applying

I think the disadvantage for ORM is probably more at top programs which can more reliably recruit the small but very valuable pool of URM, I mean look at Harvard and NYU's match lists, between both of them there are two white students, one each. 2/18 is like 11%. White students make up like 50% of med school grads per quick stats online (2019). I'm not saying this is wrong, but you asked if there's a disadvantage and I think the data will support a disadvantage at at least top institutions compared to expected proportions

Seems like order of applicants on Harvard email correlate highly with who end up matching there < is that their rank list? < NOT sure about harvard. But if email recipent list order from PD congratulation email is not alphabetical, it means something. < It's not their congratulation email; it's the email they sent about no RTM, seems like they only go down to rank #11 for 9 spots < wait how many people got email? < everyone who interviewed got it< where did the other 2 go < probably go to Stanford, Penn. < if this is the actual rank list, then those two went to NYU and Penn < damn < sounds better, I would trade

elite prestige nepotism is real, looking at stanford/harvard/yale etc makes me sad i never had a chance to begin with :'( < as someone who knows some of those people, trust me that you don't want to work with them LOL < the attendings at those programs or the residents at those programs are people we wouldn't want to work with?! this is the drama I live for! < Are people really shocked that top tier Derm programs are going to take people from top tier medical schools? (outside of those who are URM and those who took a year off and did a research year somewhere else at a top notch place)? Or did people really just believe Ilana Rosman totally on "holistic review"? < never trusted a word out of that gal's mouth tbh < Your intuition was good there.

Confession time. I ranked Harvard near the bottom of my list because it's not possible to support a family on their salary in Boston. This is a HUGE problem. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to afford a 2bed apartment as a DOCTOR in these cities. Harvard would have been a dream, but it just didn't make sense for us < I ranked all my Boston programs low for the exact same reason and I don't even have a family to support. Such a joke that they don't provide a stipend, other places with high COL (NYC, LA, SF) at least give you a housing stipend or subsidized housing. < Harvard gives 10k/year stipend for those who qualify < All residents should qualify, Harvard/MGH have enough money.

Does derm residency pedigree or med school pedigree matter for patients? Including cosmetics patients and med derm patients < Depends on where you practice. < also matters less if you don't have prestigious credentials than if you do. I had patients who bragged about their docor who went to Harvard, but if you didn't got a really prestigious place, it doesn't really hurt you as much as you might have a few extra patients who really value prestigue if you do go somewhere like that. Then you have to determine if those are the kinds of patients you want.

Can you be a pure clinical professor of Derm within a top academic program (e.g., Harvard, UCSF, Stanford, etc.)? I am referring to a position with minimal research responsibilities. If so, how difficult are these positions to acquire after residency if one comes from a mid-tier residency program? Assume I don't care about money and am willing to make well-below market salary (e.g., 100k). I know that academics is less attractive (because of $$$) but I would imagine that jobs at top tier programs are still hard to get. < pretty easy, not many people are willing to take that big of a salary cut

Tufts or HF? In terms of prestige < In terms of perceived prestige by name only, I'd go with Tufts. Having Harvard and BU Derm close by in Boston helps if you're considering fellowship as they feed off each other in terms of taking people they know.

Did anyone get RTM (direct or via mentor) from Harvard, UCSF, Penn, NYU or Stanford (officially or unofficially)? Don't need to say which one but just any of them at all? < got it from 3 of them. <Lol I already know 3 that explicity said they won't do RTM < i would say they were unofficial, individuals can be acting outside of the policy of the department as a whole

Did harvard interview people separately for the combined medicine track (1261785C0)? Versus the interviews for the 3 year general derm track < Yes that's the med-derm track, it was a separate day

Once we make it out on the other side, we need to make this process better for posterity. Culture of elitism is causing so much anxiety and $$$. I think we can all agree that med school/undergrad "pedigree" is probably one of the worst variables to consider for residency app. We should judge people on their own merit (holistically). It makes me sad to see the lack of "training" diversity in academic programs; when most of the residents & faculty trained at the same "elite" institutions: Ivy League, Stanford, Hopkins, MIT etc. Programs say they care about DEI but the only 1 or 2 URMs they have trained at Harvard, Princeton, Stanford etc. This is why people feel the need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars at an elite private institution, so they an achieve their career goals or take on an unpaid RY to crank out papers for a big shot at an elite institution. This toxic culture of "elitism" has cost each of us so much $$ and family time; it has given us impostor syndrome, and serious FUCKING anxiety. We have to be better.

any calls from Penn? < co-ask, from harvard, ucsf, stanford, nyu, nw, emory, utsw etc ? lolll < yes for two of those but they contacted my mentor not me lol<also got 1 of these but contacted mentor not me < Harvard literally sent out an email last week saying they aren't doing RTM calls. < i mean, not doing rtm is means not contacting you as a student. they (programs) who say not rtm may still contact your mentors to vet you as someone else whose mentor was contacted from a no rtm program < that's not what OP was asking about

What is wrong with some people who just repeatedly mess up with harvard votes? I can not believe some of us can be so lunatic < do you think someone would do that? just go on the internet and lie? < what makes you think it's just harvard votes? < because it is constantly added up to 20+ by one click, anyone can tell that
